Steering Committee letter urges Carlisle
support
(This letter was submitted for possibly publication
to the Daily Camera, Colorado Daily and Boulder Weekly on
July 24, 2008)
To the editor:
Who are the progressive candidates from Boulder? To find out,
the Colorado CD-2 Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America
sent detailed issue-questionnaires to the candidates for the
18th Colorado Senate District and those in other local races.
In answering our questions, both Cindy Carlisle and Rollie
Heath took progressive positions on many issues, including
fixing TABOR and electoral reform.
Of the two, we felt Cindy Carlisle offered the more thoroughly
articulated progressive positions on many issues. She has been
an early and consistent proponent of single-payer universal
health care. She emphasizes bringing green and clean technology
companies to Colorado, passing a Colorado Environmental Protection
Act, anti-SLAPP legislation, and a ban on new coal-fired power
plants. She also takes progressive stands on immigration and
labor issues, such as amending the Labor Peace Act.
Rollie Heath, on the other hand, is a very strong proponent
of public education, and makes clear his understanding of the
connection between TABOR reform and education. But a majority
of the PDA Steering Committee members found that, on balance,
Cindy’s statements reflected a stronger understanding of and
dedication to a wide range of progressive issues and that she
therefore deserved our support.
We urge readers to visit our website, www.pdacolorado.org/cd2/
and click on the “linked page” to see all of Cindy and Rollie’s
responses to our questions. On the same web-page, you can also
see responses from candidates in other districts, some of whom
may be running tight races against Republicans in the fall.
Among these, we feel that Evie Hudak, Dickey Lee Hullinghorst,
and Claire Levy strongly support a progressive agenda.
